This type of insurance covers your home, whether it is one you own or a rented property, and the personal belongings in your home. There are two main types – buildings cover and contents cover and a third type, which is a combination of the two.
Depending on the company you insure with, they may calculate the building cover based on the square metres of your property, the post code and type of property. This is how most Spanish insurers work.
With regard to contents cover, this must include everything that you would or could take with you if you left your property PLUS the kitchen cupboards, worktops, white goods (fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher etc.). The reason for this is that as the building figure is calculated, two properties of exactly the same size, would have the same rebuild value, BUT those two properties may have very different kitchens – one may be from Ikea or Leroy Merlin and cost 10,000 euros and the other may be from Poggenpohl or Bulthaup (and would cost considerably more!!)
